A Luxury Dorset Cottage Stay at Outbuildings near West Bay

Dorset is one of the most scenic counties in the UK and an ideal destination for a holiday break. To enjoy a truly relaxing stay, why not rent a luxury Dorset cottage, giving you freedom and space.

Luxury Dorset Cottage Rental

One of the best Dorset self catering options is at Outbuildings. This collection of four luxury holiday cottages has a wonderful location, just 1.5 miles from Bridport and 10 minutes drive from West Bay.

Situated on a family farm, in beautiful Dorset countryside, these luxurious holiday rentals make a great base from which to explore the surrounding area. Run by experienced local hoteliers Karen and Billy and their sons and partners, these former outbuildings are a wonderful place to stay in Dorset.

These rental cottages have been lovingly restored by the family to combine traditional features with modern comforts.

Advantages of a Dorset Holiday Rental

Fully equipped – At Outbuildings, there’s high quality kitchen equipment similar to what you’d have in your own home. Besides saving on restaurant costs, we found that this holiday rental saved our waistline too! You can eat as much or as little as you want. Each cottage has its own outdoor BBQ and indoor cosy log burner.

Child friendly – if you’re travelling with children, the Cider Room and the Pressing Room are ideal. The Pressing Room has a pull out sofa and a cot can be provided upon request. Kids will love seeing the chickens and exploring the orchard.

Dog friendly – there aren’t all that many luxury dog friendly cottages in Dorset, so Outbuildings is a real find. Your canine companions will enjoy running around the large field and 10 acres of land. Outbuildings have two charming dogs of their own: Cassie and Oscar.

No restrictive schedule – unlike a hotel stay, you can choose when to have breakfast or dinner. There are of course check-in and check-out times, but all other timings are up to you.

Flexible accommodation – at Outbuildings there’s room for a group of friends or an extended family. For small groups, the adjacent Cider Room and Pressing Room are perfect. Larger groups can take over all four cottages, currently accommodating up to 10 people. There’s ample free parking for everyone.

Personal customer service – upon arrival you have the option of full self check-in, with the aid of the Outbuildings property map or of being greeted at a social distance by one of the Outbuildings team who will show you to your cottage. Just text 30 minutes prior to arrival and Ed and his partner will light the log fire for you and get everything ready. If you have any questions during your stay, simply call or text and you’ll get a quick response. They also gave us some great tips for what to see in the local area.

Accommodation at Outbuildings

Billy, Karen, Ed and George have created a warm and stylish ambiance, using their carpentry, plumbing, seamstress, gardening and design skills. There are four luxury cottages at present, with a fifth under construction.

We stayed at The Cider Room and The Pressing Room, which both overlook a field. They each have double doors leading to a secluded patio, where you can enjoy a cup of tea or glass of wine.

Food at Outbuildings

Each cottage is provided with a welcome gift of eggs, milk and homemade cake. There is also a menu of food extras that you can purchase including delicious sourdough bread, sausages, burgers, steaks, bacon and eggs.

We highly recommend the food hampers and we tried 3 of them:

  • Gin Breakfast – with bacon, sausage, sourdough, tomatoes, homemade apple juice, jam, butter, ketchup and homemade sloe gin with tonic water. We enjoyed the gin over several days as a pre-dinner drink. There are also vegetarian breakfast and Champagne breakfast options.

  • Winter Warmer – homemade beef bourguignon or beet bourguignon for vegetarians, with homemade apple crumble or chocolate brownie for dessert, together with a superb bottle of Furleigh Estate red or white wine. This award-winning Dorset winery is known for its sparkling and still wines.

Another great option is The Parlour, which offers Outbuildings guests an exclusive 10% discount. With the Outbuildings discount card, you can also enjoy reductions at other local establishments such as Bella’s for takeaway cakes in Bridport. There are also some excellent local farm shops such as Washingpool, Felicity’s and Modbury, which runs on a self-service basis.

One of the most sought-after features of Outbuildings is their new wood-fired hot tub. You can take a soak while admiring the great outdoors and hearing the birds chirping! This outdoor hot tub can be booked for your group’s exclusive use.

Things to Do Near Bridport

There are some great suggestions on what to do near the cottages on the Outbuildings website. The area around Bridport and West Bay is extremely scenic, with rolling hills and the UNESCO World Heritage Jurassic Coast.

Whether you’re a fan of country hikes, coastal views or visiting historic houses, you’ll be spoilt for choice. Here are some of our favourite things to do near Outbuildings:

  • Abbotsbury Subtropical Gardens – spread over 30 acres, with almost 6,000 types of plants.
  • Abbotsbury Swannery & Nature Reserve – daily mass feeding of up to 600 swans. Home to the only managed colony of nesting mute swan in the world.
  • Athelhampton House – a Tudor mansion dating from 1485 with ornate Elizabethan style gardens.
Athelhampton Hall and Gardens
  • Furleigh Estate Winery – sample fantastic Dorset wines on a tour of this 85 acre Jurassic Coast vineyard.
  • Bridport – a charming market town with many independent retailers. There’s a popular arts centre and a cinema dating from the 1920s. Bridport Market takes places on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

  • Lyme Regis – famous for its fossils found on the local beaches, this is a charming Dorset seaside resort.
  • Mapperton House and Gardens – home to the Earl and Countess of Sandwich – the Coach House cafe serves up a great original sandwich!
  • South West Coast Path – admire the views of the coast and countryside on a section of this walkway which stretches for 630 miles. It’s the longest marked footpath in the UK. Climb up Golden Cap, the highest point on the South Coast, if you’re feeling energetic!

  • West Bay – a picturesque harbour with several good restaurants including The Station Kitchen, set in a converted railway carriage. If the West Bay cliffs look familiar, that’s because they feature heavily in the TV series Broadchurch.
  • Weymouth – this vibrant Dorset town is known for its golden sand beach and colourful Georgian houses.

As you can see, you won’t get bored during your stay at Outbuildings! It’s easy to reach the cottages which are located just off the A3066 road to Bridport.
