Venice is a city with a fascinating history, and so many attractions to uncover. What better base from which to explore it but from the oldest hotel? The Baglioni Hotel Luna Venice dates all the way back to 1118 and also has the advantage of being the closest hotel to Piazza San Marco. It means that you can stroll there at sunrise or sunset, avoiding the crowds.
The Baglioni Hotel Luna Venice
Located directly on the Grand Canal, you can arrive in style by water taxi at their own mooring. There’s also a separate entrance on Calle Vallaresso where Harry’s Bar and many of Venice’s most luxurious boutiques are located.
Entering the stunning palazzo, you’ll immediately notice the Murano glass chandeliers and high ceilings.

We were welcomed by the manager who gave us a potted history of the hotel and its association with the Knights Templar. The Baglioni Hotel Luna was built on the site of a demolished Templar church, Santa Maria dellβAscensione, as well as on the possible location of the Knights Templar convent.
There are several places in Venice associated with the Knights Templar, including the Casino. You can visit all of them and it makes a nice focal point for a Venice stay if you’re interested in history.
After a speedy check in, we were introduced to our personal butler. He showed us to our suite and encouraged us to contact him for any requests.

Accommodation at The Baglioni Hotel Luna Venice
Our Junior Suite was extremely large by Venice standards, at around 50 square meters. It was sumptuously decorated with silk wallpaper and beautiful chandeliers.
There was a handy closet area by the entrance to the room, with ample space for our clothes and luggage. The separate lounge was elegantly furnished with Venetian antiques.

The huge bathroom definitely has the wow factor. We love the roll-top bath and the abundance of black and white marble.

The Ortigia toiletries are from Sicily and one of our favorite brands for the quality and stylish packaging.
There is a large walk-in rain shower and cosy bathrobes and slippers. We couldn’t resist a soak in that amazing bath.

The bedroom itself has a real sense of theatre with a superb gilt bed and an imposing chandelier. Despite the hotel’s central location, you cann’t hear a sound outside.
This tranquility and the comfortable super king-sized bed means that you’ll sleep like logs.

Our butler also showed us the San Giorgio Terrace Suite. It can be connected to another room and when both are booked by a bride-to-be and groom, the hotel can put up a little gate so that the groom cannot see his bride before the wedding – what a brilliant idea!
There’s a great view over the lagoon from the 100 square meter terrace.
Little Touches at The Baglioni Hotel Luna
There was a very welcome bottle of the Baglioni’s own Prosecco on ice when we arrived in our suite. We savoured it with some delicious freshly made macarons. I had dressed appropriately for the occasion π
Breakfast at The Baglioni Hotel Luna
The Baglioni Luna Venice is part of the iconic Baglioni luxury hotel group, known for their hospitality and excellent food. We’d recently experienced their Italian Afternoon Tea at the Baglioni Hotel London so were excited to try their breakfast.
It’s not just the food that is impressive here, the Marco Polo Ballroom where breakfast is served was painted by the pupils of famous 18th century artist, Gianbattista Tiepolo.

It truly is a work of art and we spotted new details each time we looked at it. There was a fantastic buffet laid out, and even a children’s buffet section – a nice touch that we’ve never seen before.

We chose hot dishes from the buffet, although the Γ la carte menu also looked tempting. The scrambled eggs and smoked salmon were very tasty and clearly the ingredients were of the finest quality.
We didn’t dine at the hotel but there’s a well-known restaurant, Canova, as well as a cosy bar. The latter overlooks the lagoon and you can see gondolas from the window.
Our breakfast had set us up nicely for the day and we headed out to explore the other places linked to the Knights Templar, as well as some other hidden gems in Venice and off the beaten track Venice attractions. For its great location, sumptuous interiors and impeccable service, the Baglioni Hotel Luna Venice really stands out.

I love the look of the hotel especially the sweeping high ceiling! The views of the canal are perfect.
The double height ceiling was very impressive and what a location!
What incredible interiors and I love the history that comes with the hotel! I’ve never had a butler before so I think I need to put that on my 2017 hotel wish list π
It was fun having a butler, you definitely need to try it, Maggie
How neat! You can tell there is a rich history there.

That’s what I loved about this place, and also being able to stroll back from all the restaurants so easily
It was so fascinating about the Knights Templar and we saw a few other sights related to them too
This hotel is so opulent, especially with the inclusion of a butler. I love those ceilings and the parquetry floor, not to mention that adorable dress of yours. Great post.
The parquetry was so beautiful, Lyn – loved the attention to detail!
What can I say, Suze, this is another luxurious hotel that I would love to experience. We stayed in an apartment that was part of a former palace when we went to Venice. Also very beautiful, but nothing as fancy as this hotel.
Venice really does have some amazing properties, we loved the whole experience of departing by water taxi and just enjoying the views from the bar
So luxurious, and You are perfect in that frame!!!
Kisses, Paola.

Isn’t the mural incredible – sitting under that each day was amazing
What an elegant hotel! With such an extensive history in a really historic city, it makes sense that the decor at the Baglioni Hotel Luna should transport you back in time. We love the looks of it :-).
It’s true that the decor of the hotel reflects its heritage really well
I’ve stayed here, and it’s an amazing hotel. But, very very expensive. Sure, you stay in a historic place, it’s location can’t be beaten, staff are superb, but to be fair, in Venice you are out and about. And as much as i love staying in nice hotels, this was just a too expensive compared to what you get for your pennies.
Venice though, never a dull moment, a must visit destination!
That’s interesting to hear, I guess it depends how long you are staying for and whether you prefer to spend on the hotel or on other things. We loved the location and you’re right, the staff were charming
Oh wow, this has to be the most beautiful hotel you’ve featured so far! I adore the silk wallpaper, as well as the prime location allowing you to wander out and miss the crowds. Perfection!

It has a very stylish feel to it, and is definitely one of my all time favourites
Wow this is ORNATE! I must say, I’m glad women don’t have to wear those wide dresses any longer. Waaay too many narrow doorways in London π
Ha ha, I think we would struggle with those wide outfits on a day to day basis now!
Amazing hotel!
